Elsa Szczerba Honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Elsa Szczerba, BSN, RN, of ChristianaCare’s Surgical Critical Care Complex (SCCC), received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in September 2020.

The DAISY nomination came from a new ICU nurse who worked with Szczerba during a difficult night in the SCCC. The shift entailed tireless intensive care and comforting a grieving family. Throughout, Szczerba also took the time to teach and support her coworkers.

“Elsa is an excellent clinician and tremendously compassionate caregiver who delivers exceptional care by forming respectful partnerships with the patient, family and care team,” her colleague wrote.

“She is a leader for her coworkers and a resource to unit staff. Over the past year, I have learned from Elsa by witnessing how she challenges the status quo and consistently goes above and beyond to advocate for her patients and colleagues.

“She acts as a change agent to resolve issues that arise. And she is one of the friendliest faces a new ICU nurse will meet during orientation. The SCCC is lucky to call her ours and I am a better nurse because of Elsa.”

The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and ChristianaCare HomeHealth — are eligible.
