Both COVID-19 and flu (also called seasonal influenza) are viruses. Both affect the respiratory system, often with cough, fever and difficulty breathing. COVID-19 and flu are contagious and can easily spread to others. Many of the signs and symptoms are the same, so know what to look for and how to protect yourself and others.

You can get your flu shot at ChristianaCare’s primary care offices. Make an appointment at 302-777-0643.

Common symptoms of both COVID-19 and flu

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills.
  • Cough.
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • Fatigue (tiredness).
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Muscle pain or body aches.
  • Headache.
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

Other symptoms of COVID-19

  • Change in or loss of taste.
  • Change in or loss of smell.

If you feel sick

  • Check for fever.
  • Think about whether you’ve been in contact with people who are sick.
  • Contact your primary care provider. It is important to call your health care provider instead of going to the office directly so you don’t spread illness. Your health care provider will determine if you need a test for flu, for COVID-19, for another illness or if you need to be examined.

How to protect yourself against both COVID-19 and flu

  • Wear a mask.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands often.
  • Stay at least six feet away from people not in your household.

Get a flu shot: It’s is more important than ever.

This flu season will be particularly difficult due to the similar symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu. It is also possible to become co-infected by both viruses, which could lead to even more serious illness. Currently there is no vaccine for COVID-19, but there is a safe and effective vaccine for the flu.

The flu vaccine can:

  • Prevent you from getting the flu.
  • Prevent you from getting as sick as if you did not get the flu shot.
  • Prevent you from infecting your loved ones.
  • Decrease spread of flu in the community.
