Christiana Care Health System is already well known as a top employer for physicians and nurses; now it’s also recognized as one of the best employment opportunities in the U.S. for technology professionals. IDG’s Computerworld ranked Christiana Care among the nation’s “Best Places to Work in IT” in 2019.

“Our world-class IT team is transforming health care, as we strive to make a positive impact on the health of the communities we serve, reaching out to deliver the right care, at the right time, at the right place,” said Janice E. Nevin, M.D., MPH, president and CEO.

“In everything that we do, information technology is powering our ability to be exceptional today, and it is creating new opportunities for us to be even better tomorrow. Our IT professionals are helping to lead our success, as we innovate and create the health care of tomorrow.”

Christiana Care ranks 47th in the United States among large organizations on the list, which showcases companies across the country that challenge their IT staff while also providing great benefits and compensation.

“We are the caregivers behind the caregivers,” said Randall Gaboriault, MS, chief information officer and senior vice president of Innovation and Strategic Development at Christiana Care. “There is not one goal, not one objective, not one target, not one question that can be answered or solution that can be delivered that doesn’t require the change to be supported, enabled, built, created and produced by information technology.”

Gaboriault said Christiana Care’s more than 400-member IT team is energized by Christiana Care’s mission, values and industry leadership position in driving impactful innovations through the use of technology in a rapidly-changing health care landscape.

IT team members are “the caregivers behind the caregivers.”

“At Christiana Care, we serve together, guided by our values, excellence and love,” he said. “Our IT professionals gain satisfaction every day in knowing that the work they do is helping people to live healthier lives.

“By envisioning what’s possible, and then creating and delivering breakthrough capabilities, solutions and services that promote exceptional experiences and better health outcomes, we achieve excellence in quality, safety and efficiency, and we support an environment in which everyone we serve can reach their potential.”

Christiana Care’s mission- and values-driven culture sets it apart in the world of information technology.

“We take care of people,” Gaboriault said. “Our team genuinely experiences that connection with our patients and our community, as well as with the physicians, nurses and other caregivers who are on the front lines of patient care. When we provide help or build solutions, we know we’re making a real difference in people’s lives. That’s what makes it a joy to come here to work every day.”

The impact of this exceptional technology team is reflected in Christiana Care’s reputation for quality and safety. Christiana Care has been recognized four years in a row as a Best Hospital by U.S. News & World Report and is one of only 57 in the nation to achieve the highest ratings in every common adult condition or procedure. Christiana Care achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award for three consecutive years and was named by Newsweek among the World’s Best Hospitals.

The work of Christiana Care’s IT professionals helps people to live healthier lives.

With leadership from Gaboriault and his team, Christiana Care has earned the Most Wired designation from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives for four consecutive years. Christiana Care’s Information Technology team played an integral role in Christiana Care receiving the Magnet Prize from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for positive distraction therapy through virtual reality.

The IT team also worked with nurses on the Nursing Quality Monitor application, which was recognized at the American Nurses Association’s National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators Conference as a best practice for efficiency.

In addition to this “Best Places to Work in IT” ranking, Gaboriault and the IT team have been recognized with the IT industry’s highest awards, including being a four-time awardee of IDG’s CIO 100 award, a three-time awardee of Computerworld’s Laureate Award and multiple recognitions by InformationWeek, including “Most Innovative Organizations,” and “20 most Innovative IT ideas To Steal.” In 2019, Gaboriault was named to IDG’s CIO Magazine’s Hall of Fame.

Forbes magazine ranks Christiana Care the #1 Employer in Delaware in its list of “America’s Best Employers by state.” Christiana Care also was ranked for the first time as a best employer in the Philadelphia region this year in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s 2019 Top Workplaces survey. For 16 consecutive years, Christiana Care has been recognized as one of the Top Workplaces in Delaware by The News Journal.

“The market for IT talent remains very tight, and employers continue to focus on finding and holding on to the best people,” said Computerworld executive editor Ken Mingis. “Our 2019 survey shows again that the Best Places to Work in IT are dynamic organizations that provide top pay and a broad array of programs and benefits designed to make them attractive places to work. Many show that they have a commitment to training, to diversity and to improved communication and teamwork.”
