More than 250 women attended lectures on ovarian and breast cancer, featuring the genetic counselors of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, skin cancer with Jonathan E. Zieff, D.O., and stroke prevention with Mary Ciechanowski, RN, MSN, APRN, BC, CCRN.

New for 2011, Diana Dickson-Witmer, M.D., and Jacqueline Napoletano, M.D., from the Christiana Care Breast Center hosted a panel discussion on breast health for more than 90 attendees.

Christiana Care staff provided free blood-pressure screenings for 132 attendees. In addition, 149 women received no-cost bone-density screenings, with 70 measuring in the osteoporosis/osteopenia range. Breast Center staff led tours and performed mammograms for 33 women, including five uninsured women, four who utilized the Komen for the Cure program to cover their tests.

Girls Night Out attracted a diverse crowd of women of all ages, races and ethnicities from throughout the area, including New Castle, Kent and Sussex Counties, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Cecil County, Md. Of those surveyed, 32 percent of attendees identified themselves as African American/Asian/Hispanic, while 83 percent of surveyed attendees identified themselves as over the age of 45.

Event organizers collaborated with the Avon Foundation for Women, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Delaware Physicians Care Women’s Health – Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Initiative to help promote the event and provide on-site education and resources.

Local performers entertained attendees throughout the evening, with music from oldies singer Mario Rocco and local R&B performer Melodic, plus mimes from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington. Organizers also raffled off gift baskets provided by Christiana Care departments.

Girls Night Out was a collaboration of several departments within Christiana Care, including the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center’s Community Outreach and Education and Breast Center, Imaging Services, Women’s Health Services, the Department of Family & Community Medicine, Christiana Care’s Center for Heart & Vascular Health and The Medical Group of Christiana Care.
