Christiana Care celebrates organ donors during Donate Life Month

On April 15, Christiana Care Health System President and CEO Janice E. Nevin, M.D., MPH, and Gift of Life Donor Program CEO Howard Nathan raised the Donate Life flag at Christiana Hospital to recognize Donate Life Month. The flag-raising was followed by a memorial service to honor all organ and tissue donors.

Nationally, more than 123,000 people are waiting for organ transplants and a second chance at life. More than 6,300 of them live in the region encompassing Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The 40-year-old Gift of Life Donor Program is Christiana Care’s partner in helping to optimize organ and tissue donations and distribution in our community.

In 2013:

  • Christiana Care was privileged to help 28 men, women and children share a lifesaving gift of a heart, lung, liver, pancreas or kidney.
  • Another 61 individuals at Christiana Care also donated tissue, such as bone, skin, corneas and heart valves, with the potential to save or enhance the lives of more than 3,000 patients.
  • Sixty-eight individuals received vital organ transplants thanks to the partnership between Gift of Life and Christiana Care.
