The $210 million expansion and renovation of Wilmington Hospital, which will transform the century-old campus into a modern, leading-edge hospital in the heart of the city, will be completed in 2014.

Christiana Care Health System announces that DuPont has donated a $5 million gift to support the historic expansion and renovation of Wilmington Hospital.

DuPont’s cornerstone gift is an investment in Christiana Care’s legacy of building a healthy community for the city of Wilmington and surrounding region. The transformational project will dramatically increase the hospital’s capacity to provide health care and add nearly 600 jobs.

“DuPont creates sustainable solutions that address some of the most complex global challenges—like food, energy and protection—which are essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere. We are committed to collaboration and inclusivity with partners around the world, including in our headquarters community of Delaware,” said DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman. “We recognize the tremendous role Wilmington Hospital has played in the community for more than 120 years, and we are excited to be part of this historic undertaking.”

“Through the years, our neighbor DuPont has been integral to the success of many Christiana Care programs,” said Dr. Robert J. Laskowski, Christiana Care Health System president and CEO. “DuPont’s leadership on behalf of Delaware’s economic, cultural and civic life is exemplary, and its investment in this project is truly one of the most important events in the history of health care for our city, state and region.”

“Thanks to DuPont’s generosity, the Wilmington campus is set to become a modern, leading-edge hospital offering a full range of best-in-care preventive and wellness services,” said Carol Ammon, chair of the Board of Directors of Christiana Care Health System. “This gift helps ensure Delawareans receive the highest level of care and comfort across the broad spectrum of diverse medical needs for decades to come.”

In recent years, DuPont has also generously supported the expansion of Christiana Hospital in Stanton and the creation of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center on the Christiana Hospital campus.

The $210 million Wilmington Hospital renovation marks the second-largest project in Christiana Care’s history, creating more than 2,000 construction jobs. Serving as Christiana Care’s anchor since 1888, the Wilmington Hospital Campus will grow by 337,000 square feet, creating a 1 million square-foot, state-of-the-art medical center. When completed in 2014, the expansion will include:

  • An upgraded emergency department twice the current size.
  • A new surgical suite, including 13 operating rooms and four procedure rooms.
  • Capacity for 120 private patient rooms.
  • A new intensive-care unit.
  • An upgraded, 30-bed unit for the Center for Advanced Joint Replacement.
  • A nine-story, 286,000-square-foot tower.
  • A 51,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art medical office building, allowing more physicians to practice on-site.
  • A new main lobby entry repositioned on Jefferson Street with enclosed walkway to parking.
  • A tranquil atrium and healing garden.

The hospital expansion, which began in 2009, demonstrates Christiana Care’s commitment to serving the residents of Wilmington and the surrounding area through a full range of wellness and health services to people of all ages, including women’s health care services, surgery, orthopaedics, podiatry, ophthalmology, dentistry and oral surgery, pediatric medicine and general dentistry as well as diagnostic testing, an on-site pharmacy and patient-education programs.
