October 2010 Christiana Care Jefferson Award Winner Patti Christopher credits her grandfather for teaching her the importance of giving and helping her earn a reputation for being “one of the most caring and giving people we have ever met,” according to Director of Patient Care Services Joanne Matukaitis.

These days, Christopher, a Heart Failure Program case manager, volunteers regularly at Mom’s House, a free day care for young mothers trying to finish their high-school education. She and her husband also volunteer as cooks as needed for Sojourners Place, a facility that serves homeless people.

She is actively involved with the American Heart Association, and she is a past chair of the AHA’s annual Heart Ball, a fundraising event.

For 15 years, Christopher was an active member of the Ulster Project Delaware and the Wilmington Flower Market, two organizations that focus on helping children through fundraising and interreligious peace making, respectively. She is the voter-registration chairperson for the New Castle County League of Women Voters and serves as a board member for PAWS, the animal-assisted therapy volunteers who bring joy to patients at Christiana Care.
